I am only about a year late to this post / party but so glad I found it. YES to intentionality. The beauty of simplicity. A home with meaning. Such rich reminders, Shira!
I love your perspective that minimalism is about intentionality. That it’s not about a lack of things so much as a lack of things that don’t serve you. As time goes on, I find myself paring down to make space for peace and calm, but still being realistic about the way I live my life. Really love this essay.
The word "minimalism" felt almost dirty to me. I loved having beautiful things surrounding me. Something, though, got under my craw these last couple months and decluttering had its way. Soon I realized that there is freedom in clean space rather than a multitude of beautiful things. I'm not a minimalist, but not because it's off-putting. More because I'll never wrap my head around fewer books rather than more. That said, I do aspire for a much simpler space (and a simpler life) than before. I thank the revival of minimalism for that.
Wonderfully explained and elaborated…the word minimalism definitely did evoke a certain sense of reservation, or this idea of retrain, being a bit of a maximalist myself but your view-point changes the perspective on minimalism for many. It is the presence of a specific decor language and not it’s absence if that’s what mean….
