This one hit home. Thank you for writing; I feel like it landed in my inbox as I was just talking about actionable steps to align how I spend and why I spend. 🫶🏻
This can be a bit tedious, but I’ve been searching “who owns___” when looking to buy something new. This is how I learned Tacha is owned by Unilever and Hanna Anderson ultimately rolls up to LVMH. 🫠Sadly, so many companies that seem small-ish are owned by global conglomerate. It’s forcing me to explore more indie brands, but surprisingly many of which are more affordable than what I was purchasing before.
One of your best posts. I remind myself that the dopamine rush from a new purchase is actually extremely brief. I believe scientists found that something as big as a new car is only like 48 hours! A
For aligned purchasing, take a look at www.goodsuniteus.com I find it super helpful and eye-opening
Lol. I read and nodded along in agreement...and then clicked on and bought the spf / concealer duo. Thanks for the overall wisdom, and the recommendation.
Shira, I haven’t read this yet but had to jump in to say I have just seen your book in my favourite shop whilst on holiday in west Wales here in the UK, I even took a photo to show you and then I bought it! The shop is The Golden Fleece in Narbeth and I always treat myself to something there. I don’t know how to send you the photo but I was so delighted to see it there, almost like bumping into a friend 😀
I retire in 40 days. Crafting my new budget created a shockwave. So how did I respond? I decluttered three rooms in my apartment. Again. Whenever I need clarity, I declutter. Where will my extra pennies be spent? Women owned and black owned indies. I'll still make monthly contributions to Planned Parenthood and organizations serving the unhoused. Amazon can afford to see less of me as can all big box stores. Substack can also afford to see less of me. Mainstream media definitely gets no dollars. And I think I'm finished reading books by male authors.
One of my goals for this year is a bit of a financial makeover, if you will, and this post was a lovely reminder of values based spending. Next up, making a list of items I want to spend money on. Thank you for this. Also, I’m currently reading Lifestyled and I love it! 🤍
Thanks for the additional resources! I knew about Good On You but not the others. I’ve been recently looking back at repeat purchases on Amazon (I’m committing to no more product purchases on there and canceled Prime) and then searching for those products’ websites to order directly. Since most of them have been natural skin care or sustainable house goods, I’ve also used the EWG site to search out local or small business alternatives that fit my limited ingredient desire but I know not all small companies are going to be part of the EWG list. So I’m glad you’ve included so many other ways to find products I want to support.
Full disclosure - I still am a kindle reader! I usually just borrow from the library but I am a new mystery writer and do purchase ebooks from authors I like and will likely be looking to self-publish on Amazon when I write my first novel 🙂. But I did give up prime and do my best to not shop in there otherwise.

So glad it was helpful! x
I've committed to buying ZERO things from Amazon this year. If I can't find it somewhere else, I don't need it.
Impressive!

Thanks for sharing - never thought about this approach! x

The dopamine is SO fleeting! Thanks for the resource - I'll check it out. x

This made me laugh. I was hesitant to include any links in this post but a good SPF / concealer must be shared! x

Oh, how delightful! This makes me so happy :)
Feel free to email it to me or you can DM via Instagram! x
I’ve emailed it hopefully ☺️

"Whenever I need clarity, I declutter" - could not relate any more!! ❤️

So happy to hear all around! x
Highly recommend reading The Serviceberry:
Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World
By Robin Wall Kimmerer which goes nicely with these helpful tips.
Thanks for the rec! x

Good for you for cancelling Prime - I'm trying to wean myself off Amazon reliance! x
