Perfect timing for the no new things challenge! I am in the midst of planning an opportunity to move from Colorado to New Zealand, where my children are for university and perhaps forever, for a a few years. So not only do I not need to be bringing more stuff into my home, I need to be clearing things out. My goal is to move overseas with a few suitcases, a couple of boxes and my Chihuahua. Nothing is going in storage or with local family. I’m actually really excited (for lots of reasons, of course) and can’t wait to be super intentional about what I bring into my home down there.
Congratulations on your upcoming move - how exciting! We just did an interstate move with a small Uhaul (couple of kids and four cats!). Everyone thought it was odd how little we had even before we gave away more before the move. I hope your clearing goes well and the move is amazing for you!
I'm in for the challenge! On a related note, you have INSPIRED me to organize a clothing drive for a local battered women's shelter here in South Orange County. I am a paralegal and administrator for a Newport Beach law firm and yesterday we set up the donation area in our lobby. Our managing partner loved the idea and I emailed all our employees with the specifics of our project. The response was amazing! The shelter operates three resale locations to help fund their operation so our donations will be stocking their stores while we are cleaning our closets. My personal goal is to gather 100 items! I have worked for the firm for 30 years and have also lived in the same house for even more than that, so I know I can meet my goal. Even better, one of our dynamic female attorneys has pledged $5,000 to be donated from a local charity attorney organization in which she is an officer. This project feels so right and it is inspired by leaders like you who share their ideas to all of us! Thank you and keep your great thoughts coming!
That is amazing! What a great idea, I'm sure that it will be a great sucess. My daughter atrends an international school, most of the families are from previliged backgrounds, the high school kids organize all sorts of charity drives at various times of the year to help out local charities, there is a permanent bin on the school grounds for donations. I think that it's great.
Great timing! Just moved to a new house in a new state. We gave away quite a bit to lessen the load of moving and now we've spent the last 6 weeks putting our new home to rights. That comes with purchasing all the little things that the previous owner took with them, all the little fixes that needed done, and all the small touches that make the place feel like "home". I'm burnt out from shopping! It's my birthday in a week and I don't even want to open packages celebrating that!
My goal is to put more money into savings, and enjoy the well-kept and peaceful home we've created already.
I'm in! I got sucked in by a couple sales in September, so ready to take a break from buying new things that aren't completely necessary (groceries etc) this month! Let's do this!
Excellent idea! I am currently healing from a fractured tibia so I don't have the energy to go to the shops, I am not a fan of online shopping for the most part. I do really want to go see the christmas decorations that are in store already, but it will it will have to wait, I don't actually need any christmas decorations but i just like them. Does it count if you have to buy clothes or shoes for your kids? My daughter might need new leggings, her legs just keep getting longer!!!!!
I'm in for a month. I must buy infant clothes, but I don't have to buy anything for myself or my home. Last month I did unnecessary shopping - plants and corduroy trousers, impulse because eye candy feeds dopamine. During the month of October I commit to no new buy for me and intentional shopping for my godsons. Thanks for the nudge.
It’s astounding to me Shira, that our culture is so consumer-driven that a month of abstinence is a radical act. But it is! Bravo. Xo
Isn't that wild? I'm looking forward to the reset! x
