Reminder: It Only Takes One Decision to Change the Trajectory of Your Life
And my "just-do-one-thing" method for when you're stuck
Like most people, I can fall into seasons of distraction or even paralysis. The world feels noisy. The options feel infinite. And sometimes the clarity I usually have just... disappears.
It’s during these foggy times I remind myself of something I’ve been practicing since I was young: the “just-do-one-thing” method.
Here’s how it works: When I catch myself spinning—deliberating endlessly, researching one more option, asking too many people for their opinions—I stop. I get quiet. I do my best to listen to whatever intuition I can access. And I make a decision to just do one small thing.
Not the perfect thing. Just one thing.
Because motion creates clarity in a way overthinking never can. Whatever I choose will make me feel different than I feel right now. It will move me forward. I’ll learn something, meet someone, feel inspired to take one more small step.
Just one decision, one forward facing action, can alter every part of your life. Here are a few singular decisions I’ve made that had profound ripple effects:
Community → Applied for an unpaid theater internship → Years of paid theatrical work plus a whole new community of cherished friendships
Contribution → Started picking up neighborhood trash → Met a local security guard whose tires were stolen his first day driving the car he'd saved years to buy → Organized an informal community fundraiser to replace them → Watched neighbors I'd never met show up with cash and kindness
Health → Signed up for a free one-week yoga pass → Started practicing 4x a week → Established a regular workout habit I loved → Now my daughters join me regularly and Chloe plans to become a certified instructor.
Career → Jotted down what I'd learned from organizing homes → Published my first article → Started contributing to major publications → Landed a literary agent → Signed a major book deal → Transformed my career
Each one of these started with nothing more than the tiniest little flicker of curiosity and excitement. For me, that feeling has become a precious breadcrumb that I follow.
At the time, none of these felt like perfect decisions. But each one got me out of overwhelm and into action, and opened a door I didn’t even know existed.
If you’re feeling stuck right now, try this:
Grab a piece of paper. Set a timer for 10 minutes. Answer these questions without editing yourself:
What do you want to be different one year from now?
What’s one thing you’d like more of in your life?
One thing you might regret not doing?
What are you hungry for or curious about?
Where do you feel called to contribute, even in the smallest way?
Now look at what you wrote. You probably have several compelling ideas staring back at you.
Don’t overthink it. Pick one.
Then choose one tiny action you can take in the next 48 hours to explore it, experiment with it, or dip a toe in:
Send one email
Make one phone call
Buy one book
Block one hour on your calendar
Tell one person what you’re thinking about
Sign up for one class
Write one paragraph
That's it. One small step toward whatever's calling you.
You don’t need permission. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to do one thing.

When I answered the questions, I realized I'd already done the one small thing. I filled out an application to be a foster for the local animal shelter. The right dog hasn't shown up yet, but when she does, she will check all the boxes for me.
This is a lovely article - no act is too small. Like a pebble thrown in the water, you never know where the ripples will go.
I also like to ask myself "what do I see other people doing that I am interested in... And what gaps do I have in my knowledge to get there?"
This is how I start a lot of my home DIY projects!
